In order to present its projects and results and make it accountable to society, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) is organizing the First UOC International Research Symposium on 18 December 2013, a major annual event in the academic year. This year there will also be a round table on the future of the university and the challenges posed by higher education worldwide. Dr. Josep A. Planell, President of the UOC, will moderate this round table.
All members of the UOC (teaching, management and research) are invited to take part in this symposium by making posters and flash presentations. In addition, people from outside the UOC are also invited to attend the event.
Hon. Mr. Andreu Mas-Colell, Minister of Economy and Knowledge of the Government of Catalonia and President of the Fundació per a la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Foundation for the Open University of Catalonia) Board of Trustees, will welcome the symposium.
About the UOC
The UOC is a cross-cutting Catalan university with a worldwide presence, aware of the diversity of its environment and committed to the capacity of education and culture to effect social change. The UOC fosters cooperation and exchange within its university community and with other universities, institutions, the business community and civil society, whilst at the same time forging international alliances to enable sharing and learning.
The University’s fundamental objective is to ensure that anyone can have their training needs met and make the most of their efforts. To achieve this, information and communication technology (ICT) is used intensively, which allows for the barriers of space and time to be overcome and for an educational model based on personalisation and constant support for students to be offered. The UOC has solid foundations and internationally recognized results and always strives to reach greater heights.
At the UOC, the aim is to develop people’s creativity and contribute to society’s progress, driving specialised research in the knowledge society and establishing alliances with universities and institutions around the world with the same aims and values in order to build a global knowledge space.
The concept behind the UOC is that of a university that does not just use information and communication technology. The UOC is based on technology – using ICT to work and focusing on ICT as a field for research. ICT is the means and the end. The technological platform was developed internally and allows for an educational model based on teaching materials designed by the University professors themselves, tutorial activities and continual assessment.
